What news2mail.com was

news2mail.com was a free service, run from 2000 to roughly 2004, that delivered Usenet newsgroups by e-mail: pick a group, submit an address, receive the traffic. It also kept simple directory pages — one per newsgroup — describing each group and listing ways to read it.

The gateway itself is long retired, and this site does not attempt to revive it: nothing here accepts subscriptions, and no mail is sent. What survives is the part the web actually linked to — the directory. University course pages, library subject guides and internet-history references still point at these addresses, and this restoration keeps those citations resolving to honest descriptions of the groups they cite.

The current maintainers have no connection to the original operator. Where a page describes a group, the description is new editorial text written for this archive; the original one-line group charters are preserved where they were recorded.

The original site’s emblem, which appeared at the top left of every page: a winged envelope reading “Usenet via e-Mail · www.news2mail.com”. Recovered from the only surviving copy in the Internet Archive, captured 3 June 2001. It is reproduced here once, as a record of what the service looked like — it is the original operator’s work, not this restoration’s, and it is deliberately not used as this site’s own mark.

Two kinds of address the original carried are not recoverable. Its per-group tables of open news servers listed machines that have been gone for twenty years, so they are not reproduced. And individual message permalinks under /subject/ pointed into a message store that did not survive the service — one such address is preserved here, saying so plainly, because it is still cited from elsewhere.

The site it belonged to was built in two visibly different eras. Until about 2001 the pages were HTML 3.2 laid out in tables, with a search box, a hierarchy grid on the front page, and paths that began with a capital letter — /Alt.html, /Soc/Culture.html. By 2003 the same directory had been rebuilt around a stylesheet, with a navigation rail down the left in a muted blue-grey and lowercase paths. Both eras used the same accent colour, and this restoration uses it too; the addresses from both survive here, which is why the group list mixes capitalised and lowercase paths.
