soc.culture.arabic
Technical and cultural discussions of the Arab world.
One of the oldest culture groups on Usenet, soc.culture.arabic covered the whole Arabic-speaking world before most countries had their own group. Its early-1990s archive includes some of the first online debates on Arabic text encoding and romanisation.
The group’s scope — 22 countries and a global diaspora — made it noisy and vital in equal measure; moderated offshoots repeatedly formed and dissolved around it.
