soc.culture.african was the continent-wide group — a meeting point predating most country-specific groups, covering everything from Yoruba naming traditions to structural adjustment debates. Its charter deliberately spanned "Africa and things African", including the diaspora.

The group spawned many of the per-country soc.culture groups as traffic grew; crossposts between them kept a shared continental conversation alive well into the 2000s.
